This qualitative case study investigates, documents and describes the use of dance movement therapy and nonverbal observation (Laban Movement Analysis) to facilitate early childhood intervention, as a compliment to the more traditional methods of special education. The Ways of Seeing program focuses on nonverbal expression to encourage social/emotional relating. The program components include observation/assessment, intervention and educational programming. The Code of Federal Regulations 1993 Part 300.16 recognizes dance movement therapy as a related service in special education. However, dance movement therapy is often not recognized as a treatment method within early intervention and special educational programs. There is a lack of empirical research substantiating how the dance movement therapy process can benefit special needs children. This research follows a micro-ethnographic case study design to analyze the use of the Ways of Seeing program with a child with Rett Syndrome. The data analyzed consists of: a 50 minute composite videotape of sessions from 1999–2000 (age 5–6 years old); descriptive treatment notes; analysis of the video by an LMA trained colleague; and videotaped interviews of mother, and the child's ABA teacher/sitter. The session tapes and notes were chosen from the whole treatment program because some element of the event stood out to the researcher/participant as a significant change and/or advancement in the child's abilities and knowledge. The software program HyperRESEARCH, was used for the analysis. The findings demonstrate that nonverbal communication underlies all aspects of the Ways of Seeing program. The child shows improvement in all areas of development including an increase in social/emotional relating and a decrease in Rett symptoms. She shows an increase in attention and has developed a more qualitatively rich movement vocabulary. This research suggests that children with severe communication disorders can be greatly influenced by their nonverbal, body-oriented sensations. Attending to their nonverbal expressions as communications enables these actions to act as a precursor to symbolic representation and meaning making, increasing their communicative capabilities. In conclusion, movement expression is discussed as a viable language, which can be used therapeutically to foster development
